Global Fishing Watch and hotspots of unseen fishing on the high seas
Global Fishing Watch is an international nonprofit organization that endeavors to create and publicly share knowledge about human activity at sea to enable fair and sustainable use of our ocean. Vessel tracking data from the automatic identification system (AIS) are a powerful source of information that have enabled Global Fishing Watch to create datasets and tools for combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. However, transponders can be disabled, reducing the efficacy of AIS data as a monitoring tool. This talk presents an overview of Global Fishing Watch’s data and technology and previews the first global analysis of AIS disabling, which obscures up to 10% of fishing vessel activity in international waters.
